Exodus 8:8, 15
8Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, Intreat the LORD, that he may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may do sacrifice unto the LORD.
15But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.
The spirit of a child can be trained, but the will of the child must be humbled. Otherwise, the ancient seed of selfishness will take root and all who cross their path will suffer.
This particular Pharaoh was nothing more than a kid who got his way and never was made to consider others above himself. And it is easy to read about his inhumane treatment of some innocent people and think, how rude!! But the fact of the matter is many of us also want things our way or no way at all. Then surprisingly, as we raise children, the thing we can’t stand is when our children manifest selfish tendencies!
If we are ever going to be all we were destined to be, selfishness has to die. Because, eventually, like with Pharaoh, God will have to judge it in our lives and the outcome will be ugly and painful. We do well to admit our weaknesses to Him today and solicit His help in bringing change before it’s too far gone. The children, who are our future, deserve it!
