Abram
Called Beyond
Credentials
Genesis 12:1
THE LORD had said to Abram,
“leave your country, your people and your father’s
household and go to the land I
will show you.”
I can distinctly
remember those times when my mom or dad called my name. It’s a sound like
no other, especially when it was my first name plus my middle name! And
like any smart child I learned to decipher if it was a “I am so glad
you’re my child” call or a “You better hope you’re in
good with God” call. But no matter which it was, there was no denying, I
knew when I’d been called! As God’s children, calling is a very
important part of the equation. To know what your Father is saying about your
purpose, your placement, and your part in the grand scheme of things is very
significant.
The Bible is a
library filled with the testimonies of our spiritual ancestors who bear wisdom
for us to glean. Abram would be one of the first and great examples. Much like
all who are called, Abram seemed to be minding his own business when God
interrupts his life (Genesis 12:1-9). It’s important to note that God
doesn’t seem to base His selections on a person’s credentials or
ability. Abram didn’t have a noted history of serving God nor did he
achieve great accomplishments that led to God choosing Him. Like Abram, none of
us are called by God because we are so great. No, His call has everything to do
with a plan that requires His expertise while we serve as willing
vessels. Abrams’ story spans many tough years (Genesis 12:-25:18), a
few major life adjustments (like some name changes for both he and his wife),
and some pretty significant miracles (like becoming a father at the age of
100!). A calling isn’t something that reaches fulfillment overnight.
It’s a “slow cooker!”
There is nothing in
this world that will keep you on your face before God like being called. You
are constantly aware of the fact that you can’t do anything without His
direction and guidance, because you don’t know the way. And although this
sort of living can be frustrating at times, friend, there is no other true life
outside of it. If your desire is to obey God’s direction, much like
Abram, you will find yourself in some pretty strange places. But your Father
will make the journey worthwhile!

Biblical Meditation: I Peter 2:9 But you
are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to
God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness
into his wonderful light.
